Can AI Really Personalise a Child's Learning?

The dream is old and appealing: a personal tutor for every child, patient and endlessly available, meeting each learner exactly where they are. AI has made that dream suddenly plausible, and the education world is full of bold promises about it. The honest reality is more nuanced — AI can genuinely do some of what a personal tutor does, cannot do other important parts, and carries real risks that have to be managed. Here is a grounded look, so you can judge the tools your child might use.

What AI can genuinely do

Used well, AI brings real personalisation capabilities that a crowded classroom or lesson simply cannot:

Judge reasoning, not just answers. Older software could only mark an answer right or wrong. Modern AI can look at how a child worked a problem and identify the specific misconception — for example, that they are adding the numerators and denominators of fractions. That opens the door to genuinely targeted re-teaching rather than a generic "try again."

Generate explanations pitched at the individual. Instead of one fixed explanation, AI can produce a fresh one aimed at the exact point this child misunderstood, with a new example or a different angle — the essence of effective re-teaching.

Adapt continuously. AI can adjust difficulty and pace in response to each child's performance, keeping them in the productive zone, delivering the adaptive learning ideal at a scale human tutoring cannot reach.

Be endlessly patient and available. It never sighs, never runs out of time, and lets a child ask the same question five times without embarrassment — a genuinely valuable thing for an anxious learner.

These are not trivial. For a child who would otherwise sit in a one-pace lesson, well-built AI personalisation is a real step toward the responsiveness of a personal tutor.

What AI cannot do

Being equally honest about the limits:

It does not truly understand your child. AI processes patterns; it does not know your child is anxious this week, distracted by something at home, or quietly losing confidence. A good human teacher reads all of that. AI reads text and answers.

It cannot inspire the way a person can. The teacher who sparks a lifelong love of reading, who believes in a child until the child believes in themselves — that is human, and AI does not replace it.

It can be confidently wrong. AI sometimes produces plausible, fluent answers that are simply incorrect. In a learning context that is dangerous, because a child may not have the knowledge to catch the error. Ground truth and careful design matter enormously.

It can flatter instead of correct. This is one of the most serious risks. Research shows AI models have a strong tendency toward sycophancy — telling users what they want to hear. A Stanford study found chatbots were markedly more likely than humans to simply affirm a user's view, and even OpenAI had to roll back a GPT-4o update in April 2025 for being "overly flattering." The dependence risk

There is also the danger that a child leans on AI instead of learning. The large Turkish PNAS study found students given an unrestricted AI tutor did much better with it but 17% worse once it was removed — they had used it as a crutch. Crucially, that same study found a safeguarded version of the tutor largely avoided the harm. How to judge an AI learning tool

Given all this, what separates a good AI learning tool from a risky one? Look for a tool that:

  • Corrects honestly — it tells a child (kindly) when they are wrong, and does not flatter.
  • Builds independence — it guides the child to work it out, rather than handing over answers.
  • Rests on verified ground truth — its teaching is checked against real correct content, not just generated on the fly.
  • Keeps a human in the loop — it informs parents and teachers rather than replacing them.

What to do with this

  • Appreciate what AI genuinely offers: reasoning-level feedback, individualised explanations, patient availability.
  • Stay clear-eyed about what it cannot do: truly know, inspire, or guarantee correctness.
  • Treat flattery and dependence as the central risks, and prefer tools designed against them.
  • Judge a tool by whether it makes your child more independent and more honestly informed, not just happier.
